Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Q: What exactly is a Giclée (jhee-clay)
A: The French word "giclée" is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The word may have been derived from the French verb "gicler" meaning "to squirt". The term "giclee print" is printmaking technology. Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. These prints are produced by using professional ink-jet printers. Among the manufacturers of these printers are vanguards such as Epson, MacDermid Colorspan, & Hewlett-Packard. These modern technology printers are capable of producing incredibly detailed prints for both the fine art and photographic markets.

Q: What does it mean when it states that it is a limited edition?
A: The total number of prints made of one image is an edition. Since the 1930’s, numbering and signing an edition has become a standard practice. The artist’s signature is most often place in the lower right corner and the number of your print in the sequence is in the lower left corner. A limited edition guarantees that the artist is only going to make a limited number of prints or reproductions.

Q: Is that what the numbers under the print mean?
A: Yes. These numbers indicate that the print is part of a limited edition. The numbering is usually in the form of x/y, where “y” stands for the total number of impressions in this edition and “x” represents the specific number of this print. For example, the first three prints of one hundred, would be numbered 1/100, 2/100, and 3/100.

Q: Why is it important that “archival materials” are used?
A: “Archival material” refers to materials that meet performance and preservation criteria, including lignin free, pH neutral, alkaline buffered stability in light etc. Materials used are permanent, durable or chemically stable. Independent testing by Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc. (a world-leader in image-longevity testing) has established that these "Archival-Prints" or Giclées will last more than 100 years before any noticeable shift in color integrity occurs. Unlike regular printed reproductions, Giclées are truly durable "Museum quality" Fine-Art reproductions. The color and artistic value, quality of materials, and overall looks make a Fine-art Giclée much more valuable and much more expensive to produce than any other type of reproduction. Its market value increases even more, if it is of a limited edition of 100 pieces or less, and if it has been pencil signed and numbered by the Artist. All Giclées purchased here are accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate indicating title of the title of the work and size of the limited edition.

Q: What other information is on the Certificate of Authenticity?
A: A certificate of authenticity states the total quantity of prints issued in an edition, validating the authenticity of the signatures, and in the case of a limited edition, confirms the unique number inscribed on the individual print. A Certificate of Authenticity includes, besides the artist's signature, the following data about the print:

  • The total number of the edition
  • The number of the print in the sequence
  • The date the print was released
  • The medium
  • The size of the print
  • The authenticity registration number

Q: What are the shipping costs?
A: You can view an estimate of shipping costs by viewing your cart. However, final shipping costs will be displayed on the Invoice you see before confirming your order.

Q: If I'm unhappy with my purchase, can I return it?
A: Yes. Please review the procedure for returning an item under "Policies". The link is located on the top right hand side of the web page.
